The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has issued an Orange Warning for the northernmost atolls of the Maldives, from Haa Alifu to Shaviyani atolls. This alert comes as MET forecasts torrential rain and thunderstorms, raising concerns about potential flooding in these regions.
The Orange Warning, which is alert level 3, is issued following 90 mm of rainfall in one hour or 120 mm of rainfall in six hours. This level of warning indicates significant rainfall accompanied by heavy rain and flooding hazards.
According to MET, the island nation is expected to experience particularly bad weather this week. Al Jazeera's International Weather Report has predicted that Male' City, the Maldivian capital, will receive a month's worth of rain over the next three days. During the rainy monsoon season, the average monthly rainfall is between 100-200 mm.
In response to the severe weather conditions, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), along with police and other relevant agencies, has advised residents to take necessary precautions.
Residents are urged to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and heed the advice of authorities to ensure their safety during this period of extreme weather.
