Island Aviation Services Limited (IASL) has officially launched a MVR 29.85 million project to expand the Maafaru Airport apron, entrusting the work to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). A special signing ceremony was held where MTCC’s CEO Abdulla Ziyad and Island Aviation’s Managing Director Ibrahim Iyas inked the agreement.
Under the terms of the agreement, MTCC is tasked with demolishing the existing 453-square-meter fire road, removing the topsoil across 18,660 square meters, and preparing the sub-base. Additionally, they will lay a wearing course, grade and compact 4,047 square meters of land, and develop an airfield lighting system.
The total project, valued at MVR 29.85 million, is scheduled for completion within 180 days. MTCC emphasized that the apron expansion will modernize Maafaru Airport's services, creating further employment opportunities in the process.
This expansion aims to provide additional parking space for private jets, which is expected to boost the number of private jets landing at the airport. Consequently, this will increase the influx of tourists to the area and enhance the airport’s revenue through jet parking fees.
The project marks a significant step towards improving Maafaru Airport's infrastructure and capacity, aligning with the broader goals of enhancing tourism and economic growth in the region.
