Al Jazeera's International Weather Report has forecasted that Malé City, the capital of the Maldives, will experience a month's worth of rain over the next three days. This significant weather event is expected to bring rough bouts of rain equivalent to typical monthly levels within just 72 hours.
The Maldives Meteorological Services (MET) had already predicted particularly bad weather across the island nation for this week. This morning, MET issued a yellow alert for all regions of the country except for the two southernmost atolls.
The forecast includes extreme rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms. Gusts are expected to intensify between 40 to 45 miles per hour, with rough seas anticipated during this period.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and Police Services have both issued cautions, advising residents to take precautionary measures in preparation for the stormy days ahead. The heavy rainfall and accompanying severe weather conditions could potentially lead to disruptions and hazards in the region.
Residents and visitors are urged to stay informed and heed safety advisories from local authorities as Malé City prepares for this unusually heavy rainfall event.
