India Completes Major Development Projects in Addu City

The Indian government has successfully completed and handed over three significant development projects in Addu City, Maldives, under the Indian Line of Credit facility. These projects include the land reclamation project, the beach protection project, and the Hankendi Bridge project. The completion of these projects was officially inaugurated by India's Minister of External Affairs, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Maldives' Minister of Foreign Affairs, Moosa Zameer, and Minister of Construction and Infrastructure, Abdullah Mutalib.
A total of 184.3 hectares of land was reclaimed under the land reclamation project in Addu City. This includes 80 hectares from Hithadhoo, 76 hectares from Maradhoo, and 3.3 hectares from Feydhoo. Additionally, three islands totaling 8.3 hectares were reclaimed for tourism purposes, along with 4.72 hectares reclaimed from Hankendi. The Addu City Council has already named these newly created islands.
The Addu Beach Protection Project involved riveting and protecting an area of 7 km. This project is expected to open the entire city to tourism and economic activities while addressing the housing challenges faced by Addu City's residents.
The Addu Four Lane Detour Link Road, also known as the Hankendi Bridge, is another significant project developed in the southwest of Hankendi island, allocated for tourism development. This four-lane bridge project commenced in 2021 and marks a crucial step in improving the infrastructure of Addu City.
Following the completion of the Hankendi Bridge project, the groundbreaking ceremony for the Hankendi Integrated Tourism Development Project was held. This project is one of the largest tourism development initiatives in Addu City, aiming to develop 1,041 rooms with 2,082 tourist beds.
The contracts for these projects were awarded to AFCONS, an Indian company also responsible for the Thilamale’ Bridge. The entire project is valued at USD 77.229 million, showcasing the strong partnership between India and the Maldives in driving infrastructure development and economic growth in the region.
The completion of these projects signifies a major milestone for Addu City, enhancing its appeal as a tourist destination and providing a significant boost to the local economy. The collaborative efforts between India and the Maldives continue to pave the way for further development and prosperity in the region.
