The Fisheries Ministry has unveiled plans to establish a small-scale fish packing facility in Hulhumale', aimed at assisting small and medium-sized businesses. According to Dr. Hussain Sinaan, Director General of the Fisheries Ministry, current opportunities for small businesses to export fish are limited, often requiring help from larger private sector companies. This new facility will be specifically designed to support these smaller businesses.
The ministry is working to secure funding for the project from the Islamic Development Bank (IDB). Dr. Sinaan noted that the facility's operations will be planned in consultation with the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO). Even if MIFCO develops the facility, the goal is to specialize it for unions or small exporters.
The Fisheries Ministry has previously indicated that efforts are ongoing to relocate all MIFCO operations from K. Kanduoiygiri to Hulhumale'. This new facility is part of a broader strategy to enhance support for local fish exporters and boost the Maldives' fishing industry.
