President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the Maldivian government's commitment to strengthening the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). This statement was made during a meeting with SAARC Secretary General Golam Sarwar, who is on an introductory visit to the Maldives.

During the meeting, Secretary General Sarwar, who assumed office in October 2023 as the 15th Secretary-General of SAARC, briefed President Muizzu on various SAARC programs benefiting member countries. He acknowledged the Maldives’ unwavering commitment to SAARC since its inception in 1985, contributing significantly to its development.

President Muizzu expressed his hope for enhanced regional cooperation in trade, underscoring the importance of SAARC's role in fostering collaboration among South Asian nations. As one of the founding members of SAARC, Maldives has consistently supported the association’s objectives since the signing of the SAARC Charter in Dhaka on December 8, 1985.

The Secretary General's visit, which began on August 5, includes meetings with key government officials, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs Moosa Zameer and Foreign Secretary Fathimath Inaya. Secretary General Sarwar is scheduled to conclude his visit and depart on August 8.
This visit marks a significant step in reinforcing the Maldives’ commitment to regional cooperation and the collective growth of SAARC member states. President Muizzu's reaffirmation of support highlights the ongoing dedication of the Maldives to the principles and goals of SAARC, particularly in the area of regional trade and cooperation.

By fostering such relationships, the Maldives aims to contribute to the overall stability and prosperity of the South Asian region, ensuring that the benefits of SAARC initiatives reach all member countries effectively.
