Maldives Signs Landmark Agreement for First-Ever Ecosystem Atlas

The Maldives government has signed a historic agreement with the Group of Earth Observations (GEO) to create the country’s first-ever ecosystem atlas. This pivotal project, named the Global Ecosystem Atlas Accelerator for the Maldives, is designed to support decision-making processes related to development and environmental management.

The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy highlighted that the atlas will be essential for advancing environmental protection strategies and managing natural resources effectively. The Maldives' economy heavily relies on its coastal and marine environments, making this atlas crucial for sustainable development and conservation efforts.

Scheduled to incorporate detailed environmental data, the atlas will be developed using information from previous studies and technical documentation provided by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) through the USAID-funded Regenerate Project. The new resource aims to enhance the Maldives' ability to protect key environmental areas, rehabilitate damaged ecosystems, and ensure the responsible use of natural resources.

By offering a comprehensive overview of the Maldives’ environmental patterns, the atlas will serve as a vital tool for informed policy-making and conservation practices, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to sustainable environmental stewardship.
