Construction of Bridges Connecting Three Key Islands to Start in 2026

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to construct bridges connecting Gulhi Falhu, Giraavaru Falhu, and UthuruThila Falhu (UTF) as part of a strategic initiative to enhance connectivity and spur development in the Maldives. This project builds on previous plans and aims to be completed swiftly.

Speaking at the 59th Independence Day ceremony, President Muizzu emphasized the importance of these connections for the islands’ development. He assured that the work would commence promptly, with a goal to start bridge construction in 2026 and complete it within three years. Discussions have already been held with China's Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) to explore funding opportunities, and proposals are now being solicited.

The decision to build these bridges follows the allocation of land plots in Gulhi Falhu and Giraavaru Falhu to Male' residents during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration. That administration also intended to reclaim land in UTF and issue residential plots, but the project was never contracted. The current administration aims to realize this vision by speeding up the process and expanding the connectivity plan.

In addition to the bridges, the ViliMale' Bridge, which is under construction by an Indian company, will connect Male' to Thilafushi, further enhancing the island nation's infrastructure.
President Muizzu also addressed changes in the use of UTF. The former administration had signed an agreement with India to build an MNDF dockyard and planned to reclaim more land for residential plots. However, upon taking office, President Muizzu revoked this decision.

Instead, he has decided to pursue an agricultural project in partnership with China. An agreement has been signed between Maldives Industrial Development Freezone (MIDF) and China's Harbour Engineering Company Limited to develop sustainable agriculture in UTF, establishing an Agriculture Economic Zone (AEZ).

Land reclamation in UTF is set to begin before the end of the year. President Muizzu highlighted the benefits of this project, stating that self-sufficiency would improve, and foreign expenses would decrease, making the construction of a bridge even more vital. He underscored the importance of these developments in bolstering the Maldives' economy and infrastructure.

By enhancing connectivity between these key areas, the Maldives aims to create new opportunities for economic growth and improve the quality of life for its residents. The proposed bridges and associated projects reflect the administration's commitment to rapid development and strategic planning for the future.
