Minister Saeed detailed the significant strides taken to foster a creator economy during the first eight months of the current administration. A notable development is the scheduled introduction of the Indian RuPay Card in August. This initiative is part of a broader plan that includes the development of a national payment platform and integration with major regional markets, with substantial support from India.
Saeed emphasized the potential income opportunities available to numerous producers in the Maldives through various social media platforms. However, he noted that the current system’s lack of convenient payment methods has hindered the monetization of content.
In addressing these challenges, Minister Saeed has engaged with stakeholders to introduce PayPal services in the Maldives, following directives from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. Efforts are now underway to seek assistance from the United States government to facilitate this integration.
Furthermore, the introduction of WeChat Pay is now operational in the Maldives, enhancing the digital payment landscape. Minister Saeed also highlighted the activation of dollar wallets for the Bank of Maldives (BML) and the Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB).
The government has made significant progress in discussions with banks and regional offices to optimize the use of TikTok in the Maldives, with backing from the Chinese government. These developments are expected to provide a significant boost to emerging creators and digital e-commerce businesses in the country.
Minister Saeed’s announcements underscore the Maldives’ commitment to developing a robust digital economy and supporting the growth of local creators and businesses through enhanced payment solutions and international collaborations.
