Maldives and China Sign $130 Million Road Construction Deal

The Maldives has signed a Letter of Exchange (LOE) with China for the construction of roads in Male' and Villimale', marking a significant step in the country's infrastructure development. This agreement was formalized during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's first official visit to China.

The Chinese government has committed $130 million in free aid to support this road construction project. The official signing ceremony took place in China on Tuesday. Infrastructure Minister Dr. Abdulla Muthalib represented the Maldives, while Luo Zhaohui, Chairman of China International Development Corporation, signed on behalf of China.

Minister Muthalib stated that the project will commence with detailed feasibility studies, followed by the implementation phase to ensure effective execution and sustainability. This project is expected to greatly enhance the infrastructure of Male' and Villimale', promoting better connectivity and supporting economic growth.

Minister Muthalib, along with two other Maldivian ministers, is currently in China to discuss the economic situation in the Maldives and explore further financial and investment opportunities with Chinese authorities.
