On Saturday, the Maldives Meteorological Service introduced a new lightning detection system, a significant upgrade aimed at improving weather monitoring across the country. The system, installed with support from the Institute of Electrical Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was officially received by Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, Thoriq Ibrahim.
Minister Thoriq Ibrahim announced the development on X, highlighting that the new system will enable real-time detection of lightning and severe thunderstorms throughout the Maldives. This advanced technology marks a substantial enhancement in the country's weather monitoring capabilities.
Prior to this installation, the Maldives Meteorological Service lacked a lightning detection system. The new equipment is expected to play a crucial role in providing accurate and timely weather updates, particularly benefiting the aviation sector. With real-time data now available, the system will improve weather forecasting and enhance safety for flights operating in and out of the Maldives.
The introduction of this system means that weather alerts can now be issued based on real-time data, rather than relying solely on data from regional stations that had similar technology. This advancement ensures more reliable and immediate weather information, crucial for both aviation and general public safety.
The installation of the lightning detection system represents a key step forward for the Maldives Meteorological Service, aiming to provide more comprehensive and timely weather updates to support various sectors and ensure better preparedness for severe weather events.
