Maldives and USAID Strengthen Partnership for Sustainable Growth

Maldives and the United States have taken significant steps towards enhancing their collaborative efforts to foster inclusive and sustainable economic growth. This was highlighted during a recent meeting between Maldivian Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer and the Administrator of the US Agency for International Development (USAID), Samantha Power.
Foreign Minister Zameer, who is on a four-day official visit to the United States, met with Power in Washington on Tuesday. The discussions focused on a range of topics crucial for the Maldives' development and the ongoing partnership between the two nations.
According to USAID’s spokesperson, Shejal Pulivarti, Power emphasized USAID’s commitment to advancing its partnership with the Maldives. She noted that their collaboration aims to promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, protect the environment, and strengthen democratic institutions in the island nation.
One of the key topics of discussion was the Maldives’ looming debt crisis. Both parties explored efforts to respond to this challenge, alongside other initiatives such as finalizing the Maldives' commitment to join the Open Government Partnership. This move is expected to enhance transparency and governance in the country.
Another significant focus was on a USAID initiative to link resort islands with local islands, thereby promoting inclusive economic growth. This initiative aims to create economic opportunities for local communities by integrating them more closely with the tourism sector, which is a vital part of the Maldivian economy.
The discussions also covered the Maldivian government’s vision for decentralization through local governance. Minister Zameer highlighted the government’s commitment to decentralization and the strengthening of local island councils and women’s development committees. Power reaffirmed USAID’s continued support for building the capacity of these local institutions, which are essential for effective governance and community development.
The US State Department has also revealed that between 2019 and 2023, USAID provided USD 36 million in financial assistance to the Maldives. This funding has been instrumental in supporting various development projects aimed at promoting sustainable growth and enhancing the quality of life for Maldivians.
The meeting between Minister Zameer and Administrator Power underscores the strong and evolving partnership between the Maldives and the United States. By focusing on inclusive economic growth, environmental protection, and democratic strengthening, both nations are committed to a sustainable and prosperous future for the Maldives.
