Velana International Airport's New Terminal to Be Completed by 2025

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the new terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) is expected to be completed by 2025. This development is part of a broader effort to modernize the airport, bringing it up to contemporary standards.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the People's National Congress (PNC) headquarters, President Muizzu emphasized the importance of expediting the completion of VIA's development. He noted that the new terminal is a significant component of this modernization project, which also includes other enhancements to improve the overall airport experience.
The Maldives Airport Company Limited (MACL) confirmed that the new terminal will feature advanced facilities, including aero boarding, which will be available for passengers by the end of this year. These aero bridges will allow passengers to board aircraft directly, ensuring a more convenient and seamless travel experience.
Although the initial goal was to complete the new terminal by the end of this year, President Muizzu acknowledged that the realistic timeline for project completion is now set for 2025. He stressed that the development of VIA remains the government's primary focus, with significant economic growth anticipated upon its completion.
The current passenger terminal at VIA can accommodate 1.5 million passengers annually. In contrast, the new 78,000-acre terminal is designed to handle 7.5 million passengers per year. It will be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including advanced aero boarding and a modern baggage handling system. This expansion will address current space constraints and provide a range of services to enhance the passenger experience.
In addition to these improvements, the new terminal will feature a variety of food and beverage outlets, retail spaces, and lounges. These additions are expected to significantly improve the overall experience for travelers passing through the airport.
President Muizzu also announced the commencement of the second phase of the project. He assured that the works for the first part of this phase will be completed on schedule, further contributing to the airport's overall development. This phase will continue to build on the foundation laid by the first phase, ensuring that VIA remains a key hub for international travel and commerce.
The modernization of Velana International Airport is a transformative project for the Maldives. It reflects the government's commitment to improving the country's infrastructure and enhancing its appeal as a global tourist destination. The expanded capacity and improved facilities at VIA are expected to drive significant economic growth, benefiting both the local economy and the wider region.
As the development progresses, travelers can look forward to a more efficient and enjoyable experience at Velana International Airport. The new terminal, with its advanced features and expanded capacity, will play a crucial role in supporting the Maldives' growing tourism industry and facilitating international trade.
In conclusion, the ongoing enhancements at Velana International Airport, including the new terminal set to be completed by 2025, represent a major step forward for the Maldives. These developments will not only improve the travel experience for passengers but also contribute to the country's economic growth and development.
