New Year-Round Service to Deliver Perishables to Addu City from India

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) CEO Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim has announced a new initiative to ensure a steady supply of perishable goods to Addu City from India, starting in July. This permanent service, set to begin on July 1, is a collaboration between MPL and Hithadhoo Port Limited, operated by the Indian-based Finesse Group, the largest importer of fruits and vegetables in the Maldives.
In a recent social media post, Wajeeh shared details about this year-round service, which will run without interruption, with shipments arriving every 10-15 days. This marks a significant upgrade from the previous system where MPL provided perishable goods delivery only on specific days, with the rest of the imports coming from Male' City.
The new service aims to improve the availability of essential items such as eggs, onions, potatoes, vegetables, and fruits for the residents of Addu. The vessels used for this service are equipped to transport not only fresh produce but also other food items and general cargo from India.
This initiative is expected to greatly benefit the residents of Addu City by ensuring a consistent and reliable supply of fresh produce and other essentials. The collaboration with Finesse Group guarantees that the goods will be of high quality, addressing the needs of the local community effectively.
In addition to this new service, Maldives State Shipping (MSS) will continue its operations, transporting perishable goods between Addu and Male'. MSS will bring goods from abroad to Male' and then ferry them to Addu, maintaining a steady flow of essential items.
Wajeeh highlighted the importance of this service for the local economy and the well-being of Addu's residents. The uninterrupted supply of fresh produce and other goods will help in stabilizing prices and ensuring the availability of essential items, which is particularly crucial during times of supply chain disruptions.
The introduction of this permanent delivery service aligns with MPL’s commitment to enhancing logistics and supply chain efficiency in the Maldives. By partnering with established entities like the Finesse Group, MPL aims to set a new standard in the import and distribution of perishable goods, ensuring that residents of Addu City receive their necessities in a timely and reliable manner.
Overall, this initiative represents a significant step forward in improving the logistics infrastructure in the Maldives, particularly for the southern atolls. It underscores the government’s and MPL’s dedication to enhancing the quality of life for Maldivians by ensuring that essential goods are readily available.
With the launch of this new service, residents of Addu City can look forward to a more reliable supply of fresh produce and other essential items, significantly improving their daily lives and contributing to the overall economic stability of the region.
