David Sislen Appointed World Bank Country Director for Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka

The World Bank has announced the appointment of David Sislen as the new Country Director for Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. Sislen will officially take over the role starting July 1, succeeding Faris Hadad-Zervos, who will transition to a different position within the bank.
David Sislen, who holds both US and Italian passports, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He joined the World Bank in 2001 as an economist in the bank's urban cluster unit and has since held various operational and managerial positions across multiple regions. His most recent assignment was as Practice Manager for Urban, Disaster Risk Management, and Land in the Latin America and Caribbean Region, based in Washington DC.
In his first message following the announcement, Sislen expressed his enthusiasm for his new role and outlined his key priorities. “My key priority will be to lead the strategic dialogue to shape and implement operational engagements in line with the Bank’s focus on speed, scale, and impact, working closely with the Government, development partners, and diverse stakeholders,” Sislen said.
As Country Director, Sislen will oversee a significant World Bank portfolio in the Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, valued at approximately USD 4.8 billion. This role will involve managing and implementing various development projects and initiatives aimed at fostering economic growth and development in these countries.
Sislen's extensive experience and background make him well-suited to lead these efforts. During his tenure at the World Bank, he has been involved in numerous projects that address urban development, disaster risk management, and land issues. These areas are critical for the sustainable development of Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, which face unique challenges related to urbanization, climate change, and economic development.
Sislen’s appointment comes at a crucial time as these countries continue to navigate the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and work towards economic recovery. His leadership is expected to play a vital role in supporting these nations in their efforts to build resilient economies and improve the livelihoods of their populations.
One of Sislen's immediate tasks will be to engage with stakeholders and partners in the region. This includes working closely with the governments of Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, as well as collaborating with development partners and other key stakeholders. This collaborative approach will be essential for ensuring that the World Bank’s initiatives are effectively aligned with the needs and priorities of these countries.
In addition to his professional expertise, Sislen’s ability to navigate complex international landscapes and build strong relationships with diverse stakeholders will be invaluable. His commitment to promoting sustainable development and addressing key issues such as disaster risk management and urban development aligns well with the World Bank’s broader goals in the region.
As the new Country Director, Sislen will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on the development trajectory of Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. His leadership will be instrumental in driving forward the World Bank’s mission to reduce poverty and boost shared prosperity in these countries.
In summary, David Sislen’s appointment as the new Country Director for Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka marks a significant step for the World Bank’s operations in the region. With his extensive experience and strategic vision, Sislen is poised to lead efforts to address key development challenges and support the sustainable growth of these nations. The World Bank and its partners look forward to working with Sislen to achieve these important goals.
