Addu City's Mayor, Ali Nizar, has voiced strong confidence in the success of the planned garment factory in the city, emphasizing its potential to significantly boost the local economy. Speaking on a program aired by PSM, Mayor Nizar expressed his belief that a garment factory in the Maldives can thrive and bring long-term economic benefits to Addu City.
Mayor Nizar acknowledged that while there had been a previous garment factory in the city, the new establishment would operate under a different model. One of the primary challenges highlighted by the mayor is finding skilled labor for the factory. However, he remains optimistic that the factory will create numerous job opportunities for the locals, contributing to sustained economic growth in the region.
The mayor underscored the high demand for clothing and apparel within the Maldives, particularly for resorts and guesthouses. He pointed out that items such as bed sheets, towels, and other textiles, which require regular renewal, are consistently imported. By producing these items locally, the factory could meet national demand efficiently.
"...for instance the garments and clothes resorts and guesthouses require, such as bed sheets, towels, and items that require consistent imports since they need to be regularly renewed," said Mayor Nizar.
He also noted that the factory, although initially limited to Addu City, has the potential to cater to nationwide demand without significant challenges. He referenced the success of regional countries in manufacturing famous brands for export to Europe, indicating a positive outlook for the factory's future operations.
The previous garment factory in Gan was operated by Sri Lankan firms. This time, the Business Center Corporation (BCC) has been tasked with developing the new factory. The BCC has stated that this project aligns with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's vision of providing commercially viable avenues for small to medium enterprises (SMEs) in economically constrained segments. This initiative is seen as an opportunity for SMEs to expand and thrive.
Mayor Nizar emphasized that the new factory is not just about producing garments but also about creating a sustainable business environment that can support the local community and economy. The factory is expected to play a crucial role in reducing the Maldives' reliance on imported textiles, thus retaining more economic value within the country.
The project is poised to offer several benefits:
Mayor Ali Nizar's optimism about the new garment factory is well-founded, given the potential economic benefits it promises to bring to Addu City and beyond. With the support of the Business Center Corporation and alignment with the government's economic vision, the factory is set to become a cornerstone of local economic development. The initiative not only aims to meet the immediate demand for textiles but also to establish a sustainable and thriving business environment in Addu City.
