The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has officially resumed the extensive land reclamation project in Hulhumale' Phase III. This decision follows a temporary halt due to environmental concerns, specifically coral bleaching, as highlighted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The project, which began on September 22, 2023, is critical for the region's expansion plans and is being carried out in three phases.
In a recent update, HDC reported the successful completion of reclamation at Site A, encompassing 10 hectares of land. The reclamation work at Site B started in October, with 13 out of the planned 26 hectares already dredged. The project aims to reclaim a total of 63 hectares, including the final Site C, which will cover 24 hectares.
However, HDC noted that some safaris and vessels within the coastal vicinity of the reclaimed areas had not been removed, posing significant safety risks. The corporation has mandated the removal of these vessels by June 30 to avoid any further delays and ensure the safe continuation of dredging activities. Entry of landing crafts into the dredging areas has previously caused considerable damage to safaris, leading to dangerous incidents.
HDC has contracted the Sri Lankan-based Capital Marine and Civil Construction Company Private Limited (CMCC) to execute this ambitious project. The resumption of the land reclamation project comes after thorough preparations and adjustments to ensure minimal environmental impact and adherence to safety protocols.
The project had faced a significant pause due to the coral bleaching issue, leaving 16 hectares in Site B and 24 hectares in Site C unreclaimed. With the recommencement of activities, HDC is optimistic about meeting its targets and fulfilling the project's objectives.
The newly reclaimed land is intended to be used for housing developments and the establishment of essential public services. This initiative is part of a broader effort to accommodate the growing population and enhance living standards in Hulhumale'. The expansion is expected to provide much-needed residential space and improve the overall infrastructure for the community.
In summary, the Hulhumale' Phase III land reclamation project is back on track, aiming to reclaim a total of 63 hectares across three sites. The project, managed by HDC and executed by CMCC, is set to play a crucial role in the urban development of Hulhumale', providing new housing and public amenities for future residents.
