In a move towards environmental stewardship and corporate social responsibility, State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has announced a groundbreaking commitment to plant at least 500,000 trees over the next five years. This landmark decision, formalized through an agreement signed between STELCO's Managing Director Hussain Fahmy and the Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy, Thoriq Ibrahim, signifies a significant contribution to the Maldives' sustainability efforts.
The signing ceremony, held in conjunction with the inauguration of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's ambitious tree-planting program aiming to plant five million trees during his five-year term, underscores the collective commitment towards creating a greener Maldives and bolstering resilience against climate change impacts.
Under the government's comprehensive plan, over 90 different types of plants will be strategically planted across the Maldives within the next five years. Continuous monitoring of the health and carbon intake of these trees will ensure their effective contribution to the environment.
STELCO's participation in this program not only demonstrates its dedication to environmental preservation but also sets a precedent for other corporations to prioritize sustainability in their operations. By actively engaging in tree-planting initiatives, STELCO aims to significantly enhance the country's green cover, promote carbon sequestration, and foster biodiversity.
This collaborative effort between STELCO and the Maldivian government aligns with the broader vision of fostering a sustainable future for the Maldives. Through such initiatives, the nation moves closer to achieving its environmental goals while setting an example for responsible corporate citizenship.
