Maldives Government Disburses USD 57 Million to Fishermen

In a recent press conference, Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam revealed that the Maldivian government has disbursed USD 57 million to fishermen, highlighting the administration's dedication to supporting this vital sector. "Clearing these payments has been a top priority for our administration. We inherited a backlog of USD 16 million owed to fishermen when we assumed office. I am pleased to report that we have cleared payments up to April of the previous year," said Minister Shiyam. "We are committed to ensuring that all payments are made within 48 hours."
The minister also addressed challenges faced by the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited (MIFCO), particularly regarding fuel expenditure. MIFCO struggles to reduce its fuel costs without a decrease in overall fuel prices. To mitigate these costs, the government plans to convert 35% of the energy required by MIFCO factories to renewable sources. This initiative aligns with global efforts to adopt sustainable energy solutions and reduce dependency on fossil fuels.
"We are actively seeking assistance from the World Bank to support our renewable energy initiative," Minister Shiyam explained. "By transitioning to renewable energy, we aim to reduce operational costs and enhance the sustainability of our fisheries sector."
