In collaboration with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the ministry introduced this scheme to empower farmers and foster agricultural development. The program, announced during a ceremony, offers a one-month window for farmers to prepare and submit their proposals, with the official acceptance period commencing on June 25, 2024.
Project Director Shafana Rasheed emphasized the scheme's significance in providing financial support to agricultural endeavors. Interested parties can submit their proposals through the SME Development Finance Corporation (SDFC)'s portal.
Minister of Agriculture Dr. Aishath Rameela underscored the ministry's commitment to advancing agricultural opportunities, particularly for small-to-medium enterprises, civil associations, and cooperatives across Haa Dhaal, Haa Alif, and Shaviyani atolls. The scheme's initial phase will prioritize agricultural products, including the installation of modern facilities such as greenhouses and hydronic systems.
Dr. Rameela outlined the scheme's future phases, which will encompass extending agricultural supplies, establishing cold storage facilities, and other essential components. Notably, the program aligns with the Maldives Agri-Business Program's objective to empower women and youth by enhancing their agricultural awareness and practices.
As part of this larger initiative, the ministry, in collaboration with IFAD, has established island farmer forums and conducts regular awareness and training programs across the targeted atolls.
The "Dhanduveri Manfaa" scheme signals a concerted effort by the Maldivian government to revitalize and modernize the agricultural sector, ensuring sustainable practices and fostering economic growth in the region.
