Maldives Boosts Fish Processing Capacity with 2 New Factories, Targets 250 Tonnes

In a strategic move to elevate its fish processing capabilities, the Maldives has embarked on a $175 million project spearheaded by China's Dongfang Electric International. The endeavor aims to augment the processing capacity of the Lh.Felivaru factory and erect fish processing plants in two more islands.
Under this initiative, the Maldives will witness the establishment of fish processing facilities capable of handling 100 tonnes in Lh. Felivar, 50 tonnes in Dh. Madheli, and another 100 tonnes in Gdh. Fiyori. This substantial investment, inked during President Dr. Muizzu's visit to China, underscores the nation's commitment to bolstering its fisheries sector.
Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam emphasized the government's strategic shift towards exporting processed fish, signaling a transition from chilled and frozen variants. With an ambitious timeline of 18 months, the Maldives endeavors to swiftly complete the construction and commence meat processing operations across the newly established factories.
