Japan Pledges $4.3 Million to Bolster Maldives' Disaster Response Capacity

In a significant move to fortify the Maldives' ability to respond effectively to recurring natural hazards, the Government of Japan has pledged a generous grant of USD 4.3 million. The grant agreement, formalized by Her Excellency Mrs. Takeuchi Midori, Ambassador of Japan to Maldives, and His Excellency Moosa Zameer, Minister of Foreign Affairs, underscores Japan's commitment to supporting the Maldives in its socio-economic development.

This substantial funding aims to bolster the resilience of over 130 outer islands, along with Greater Malé, against natural disasters. The initiative focuses on empowering island communities and enhancing the operational capacity of the National Disaster Management Authority for flood management and firefighting. The grant will facilitate the procurement of essential equipment, including water pumps, firefighting vehicles, and specialized machinery.
This latest commitment builds upon Japan's previous contributions, reflecting a longstanding partnership between the two nations in disaster preparedness and climate resilience. Japan's support aligns with the Maldives' ongoing efforts to address climate change impacts and mitigate the adverse effects of natural disasters, marking a significant step towards a more resilient and sustainable future.
