Back in September this year, direct cargo ferry services between Maldives-India was commenced. At inception, operations ran between the northern island of Maldives, Kulhudhuffushi and Kochi (Cochin), a major port city in the south-west coast of India. Following this, earlier this month, cargo ferry services commenced between the Southern Ports of Maldives in Addu Atoll and Thoothukudi (formerly known as Tuticorin), a port city in South India.
Yesterday, cargo ferry services officially between the southern island, Thinadhoo in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll and Thoothukudi. The vessel to be utilized for operations in this regard, 'MV Bonthi II’ departed to India on 24th November and docked at Thinadhoo, yesterday, with 400 tonnes of cargo as part of its return to Maldives. According to the Managing Director of MSS, Mr. Abdulla Saeed, in its future voyages, maximum capacity of the vessel will be put to use. Trips between Thinadhoo and Thoothukudi will take up 20 days.
Cadets will be provided the opportunity to take part in officer training programs depending on availability.
A ceremony was held yesterday, to mark the occasion which was attended by the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Ms. Aishath Nahula. In addressing the ceremony, she commented that the beginning of the service demonstrated the government's efforts to boost commercial activity in Maldives' south. The current administration aims to strengthen the transportation methods in the country and to provide quick transportation between the neighboring countries and Maldives at an affordable prize for the citizens.
