In a significant move to strengthen tourism ties, China has unveiled plans to initiate charter flights between China and the Maldives, starting in February. The announcement was made by China's Ambassador to Maldives, Wangli Xing, during a press conference. Ambassador Xing expressed China's full support for President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's efforts to position China as the leading market for Maldives tourism.
The inaugural charter flight is scheduled for the 14th of next month, with potential expansion to commercial flights based on demand. President Muizzu, following a successful visit to China, emphasized discussions to increase Chinese tourist arrivals and secure additional flights.
Direct flights between the two nations are set to increase, with China's Xiamen Airlines launching flights to Maldives in March. President Muizzu also outlined plans to enhance Maldives' marketing efforts in China, aiming to make China the primary source of tourism for the country.
Last year, Maldives welcomed 1.8 million tourists, and with the new initiatives in place, the government targets attracting 2 million tourists in the current year.
