Empowering Maldivians: Three Key Construction Sector Jobs Exclusively Reserved for Locals

In a significant move toward empowering local professionals and fostering greater control in the construction sector, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced on the evening of December 24th, 2023, that the Maldivian government has decided to reserve three essential jobs in the industry exclusively for Maldivians.
The decision, aligned with the administration's commitment to promoting local talent and participation, was revealed during the Maldives National Association of Construction Industry (MACI) Builders Awards 2023 held at JEN Maldives Malé by Shangri-La.
President Muizzu, addressing the audience at the ceremony, disclosed that following recent cabinet discussions, the government plans to designate three key roles – build inspectors, site supervisors, and surveyors – exclusively for Maldivians within the next two years.
"We envision a future where these three areas, namely build inspectors, site supervisors, and surveyors, will be specifically open for Maldivians only. This move aims to provide our citizens with greater opportunities and control in the construction sector," President Muizzu stated.
Highlighting the construction industry's significant contribution as the second-largest economic sector in the Maldives, President Muizzu emphasized the importance of filling industry-related roles, including civil engineering and architecture, exclusively with Maldivian professionals in the future.
"In our 20-year master plan, our vision is to make the entire industry run by Maldivian citizens. This strategic decision is a step towards achieving that goal," President Muizzu concluded.
The move is expected to not only enhance job opportunities for local professionals but also contribute to the sustainable development and growth of the construction sector, reinforcing the government's commitment to building a skilled and empowered workforce in the Maldives.
