Our island nation is a popular holiday destination worldwide. However, we said a temporary goodbye to our prestigious tourism industry for a period of almost three months due to the spread of the deadly coronavirus in the country. When the travel restrictions were annulled on 15th July, the number of daily tourist arrivals still remained relatively low. Needless to say, fast-forward to December, a peak season, the numbers have reached new heights.
In this regard, Minister of Tourism, Dr. Abdulla Mausoom, revealed via a tweet yesterday that, over 5555 tourist arrivals were recorded on the day, which marks a new highest since the border reopening. In his tweet, the Minister extended his gratitude for all the travel and tourism partners, related authorities and the Maldivian community for their contribution in helping reach this milestone.
Since the border reopening, a total of 132,803 tourists have arrived in Maldives as of 20th December whereas the number totals up to 515,650 when tourist arrivals from the months prior to the travel ban are included. The top three markets since the border reopening has been Russia, India and the United Kingdom, respectively.
Presently, a total of 467 tourist accommodation facilities are in operation; 139 resorts/marinas, 10 hotels, 130 safari vessels and 188 guesthouses, all collectively accounting to 39,587 beds.
