Tourism Minister Addresses Concerns Over GST Impact on Cruise Lines in Maldives

Ibrahim Faisal, the Minister of Tourism, has stepped forward to address concerns surrounding the recent imposition of Goods and Services Tax (GST) on cruise lines visiting Maldives. In response to the changes in regulations for foreign safaris, yachts, and cruise lines introduced in September, Minister Faisal acknowledged the challenges posed by the new fee structure for rooms occupied by passengers on cruise ships.
The adjustments in the fee system have raised worries about increased operational costs for international cruise and yacht operators, potentially impacting Maldives' appeal as a tourist destination. The government's decision to revise these rules aligns with its broader strategy to regulate maritime tourism, aiming for a more structured and financially sustainable environment. Minister Faisal expressed confidence in the proposed amendments, emphasizing their intent to address the current difficulties faced by the cruise industry. This reassurance comes amid growing concerns, particularly from the Maldives Association for Yacht Agency (MAYA), regarding the potential cancellation of scheduled cruise lines during the upcoming holiday season.
