The operator of Velana International Airport, Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), has stated that they have welcome 244 jets in November 2020 which is a stunning increase by 142% In jet landings when compared to the same period last year. Accordingly, whist only 101 jet movements was recorded in November 2019, this year, the number has increased up to 244.
A similar observation was also made in the month of October. Whilst a total of 100 jet movements were recorded during October 2019, with an increase by 73%, 173 jet movements were confirmed for the period of October 2020. Additionally, they note that the number of jet landings recorded so far in the month of December, has also increased in comparison to the previous year.
Winter is the peak season for tourist arrivals in the Maldives which consequently also sees an increase in jet movements. On previous occasions, the island nation has witnessed increase in jet landings up to 15 jets per day during this peak season.
As it is expected that jet landings will even further increase, MACL notes that hat the west apron, in front of the current international terminal was being developed speedily for aircraft parking in order to increase their capacity.
Jet landings are also commonly observed at other airports in Maldives such as; Addu, Kooddoo, Kudahuvadhoo, and Maafaru Airports.
