President Unveils Vision for 100 Metric Tonne Canning Plant to Elevate Maldives' Fishing Industry

In a significant development, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans for the establishment of a state-of-the-art 100 metric tonne canning factory in Felivaru. Speaking at the 43rd Fishermen’s Day ceremony at Dharubaaruge Rannabadeyri Hall, the President emphasized the government's commitment to securing fair prices for Maldivian fish.
President Muizzu outlined a strategic shift in the export of Maldivian seafood, advocating for environmentally conscious practices and the promotion of Maldives-branded fish in global markets. These initiatives aim to command higher prices for local fishermen, particularly for skipjack tuna, a significant export.
Currently, a substantial portion of skipjack tuna is exported frozen, and the President is determined to alter this approach, ensuring equitable compensation for local fishermen. The plans also include encouraging investments and providing opportunities for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to contribute to the growth of the fishing industry.
Highlighting the ongoing efforts in Felivaru, the President expressed the importance of constructing an additional 100 metric tonne canning plant. This expansion presents a crucial opportunity for the Maldives Fishermen’s Cooperative (MIFCO) to enhance the export volume of value-added canned fish, signaling a positive trajectory for the country's fishing sector.
