In a significant move towards sustainable energy, the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy unveiled the "Magey Solar" program on November 28, 2023. Aimed at empowering households with solar energy, the initiative was inaugurated by the Minister of Energy, Hon Thaariq Ibrahim, with a focus on curbing electricity expenses and diminishing the country's dependence on oil-generated power.
The first phase of "Magey Solar" kicks off today, offering households the opportunity to benefit from solar PV power generation systems. A total of 3 MW capacity will be allocated to households in this initial phase, marking a crucial step in the nation's transition towards renewable energy.
As part of the launch, the government initiated a public tender for the supply of the 3 MW solar PV systems to households. This innovative measure allows individuals interested in installing solar PV systems to make affordable installment payments through utility companies, following a prescribed procedure and utilizing the net metering method.
Recognizing the challenge of upfront costs for solar PV systems in the global market, the "Magey Solar" program addresses this barrier by facilitating installment payments. While solar PV systems boast a long lifespan, the program's design ensures accessibility for the average person, unlocking the benefits of solar energy for an extended period.
"Magey Solar" represents a collaborative effort involving the government, utility companies, and foreign donors, highlighting the commitment to a sustainable and eco-friendly energy landscape in the Maldives. The program's launch marks a pivotal moment in fostering green energy solutions for households, promoting financial accessibility and environmental responsibility.
