State owned enterprise undertaking and managing the overall planning and building of the Maldives’ biggest and most ambitious urban development project – the Hulhumale’ City – Housing Development Corporation Limited (HDC), on Saturday, organized a large-scaled cleanup of the city; ‘Saafu Hulhumale’.
The event was inaugurated by the Vice President Faisal Naseem, during a special ceremony held. In speaking at the ceremony, he stressed on the Government's commitment to protecting the environment, ensuring road safety and providing clean and safe neighborhoods and also highlighted its commitment to eliminate single-use plastic in the country.
As part of the cleanup, cleaning activities were conducted in 40 different areas of Hulhumale’ City over the course of 2 hours. The Vice President, accompanied by some Ministers, HDC staffs, NGOs and residents of Hulhumale’ City participated in the event. A whopping total of 18 tonnes of waste was collected mostly comprising of plastic bottles, plastic bags and disposable plates, cups, cutleries etc.
On a side note, the event was made free of single-use plastic by participant’s use of reusable water bottles during the event whereas water dispensers were placed for refills at 20 different locations.
HDC notes that they look forward to organizing similar cleanup events in the near future.
