IGMH Invests Nearly MVR 1 Billion in Outsourced Departments for Enhanced Specialized Care

Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) has made a significant investment, nearing MVR 1 billion, in its outsourced departments, according to a response to a right-to-information (RTI) application by Mihaaru News. The National Cardiac Center and National Urorenal and Fertility Centers of IGMH are managed by Indian hospitals.
Since November 15, 2015, India's Meditrina Hospital has overseen IGMH's National Cardiac Center under a 10-year contract. This agreement encompasses clinical services, management, and training for local doctors, enabling IGMH to offer previously unavailable services in the Maldives. IGMH has allocated USD 28.7 million (MVR 442 million) to Meditrina, along with MVR 355,647 in doctor salaries at the cardiac center.

Additionally, NU Hospital was contracted on May 2, 2016, to manage IGMH's Urorenal and Fertility Center for a period of 15 years, with similar provisions for clinical services, management, and training of local doctors. IGMH has invested USD 33.7 million (MVR 521 million) in NU Hospital, with an additional MVR 3.8 million spent on doctors during this period.
The Maldivian government has disbursed a total of MVR 963,997,830 to Indian hospitals for department management, with the inclusive expenditure reaching MVR 968 million.
IGMH emphasizes its collaborative efforts with foreign hospitals to introduce tertiary medical services, specialist care, and professional guidance, ensuring that local doctors receive comprehensive training. This strategic approach aims to enhance the healthcare landscape in the Maldives and fortify its medical infrastructure.
