In a notable policy shift, the Ministry of Economic Development has assumed authority over the issuance of permits for night markets. Previously, this responsibility rested with City and Island Councils.
The regulation, officially announced on September 26, has undergone six amendments to refine the process. Under the new policy, permits for fairs, night markets, or street markets will be exclusively granted by the ministry.
A significant update requires applicants to submit their night market requests through an online form. Additionally, the ministry is mandated to communicate their decision within five days of receiving the permission application.
The policy also outlines that the sale of imported goods will be permitted in connection with festivals. However, the ministry retains the right to withhold or revoke permits in cases of non-compliance with the conduct regulations outlined in the market policy.
This streamlined approach aims to facilitate smoother operations for night markets, ensuring compliance while fostering vibrant market activities across the region.
