In My Mind: Capturing the Beauty of Mental Health Through Photography

In an increasingly fast-paced world, where the demands of daily life can take a toll on our mental well-being, it's vital to pause and reflect on the beauty of our minds. The National Center for Mental Health, in collaboration with well-wishing partners, introduced the "In My Mind" art exhibition in October 2019. This visionary exhibition aimed to raise awareness about mental health issues and eradicate the stigma surrounding them by using artistic expressions to showcase the intricate beauty of our minds.

This year, as part of the celebration for the first-ever Mental Health Conference, #Oevaru2023, they are continuing this artistic exploration of mental health through "In My Mind" Photographic Expression. The campaign, running from September 7th to October 7th, 2023, invites individuals to share what mental health means to them through the lens of a camera.

The primary objective of this initiative is to send a message of hope and encourage people to engage in positive activities that support their mental well-being. Participants are encouraged to submit photos that depict how they care for themselves, connect with others, establish healthy routines, stay positive, find a sense of belonging, and express themselves creatively. The possibilities are as diverse as the human experience itself.

One of the essential aspects of this campaign is its inclusivity. Anyone, regardless of their photography skills, can participate. The only requirement is a passion for mental health and an understanding of its significance.

However, there are guidelines in place to ensure that the submissions are in line with the campaign's ethos. Photos that are offensive, disrespectful, religiously or sexually explicit, or intended to insult any party will not be accepted. The National Center for Mental Health aims to promote mental well-being and awareness while respecting the values and sensitivities of all individuals.

To participate, simply send your photo to oevaru.cep@gmail.com with your name, age, location, and contact email address. You're also welcome to share a few words about the story behind your image, adding depth and context to your submission. A caption in both Dhivehi and English is appreciated.

The deadline for submissions is October 7th, 2023.

The submitted photos will serve multiple purposes. They will form a captivating mural displayed at the upcoming Mental Health Conference on October 15th and 16th at Villa Nautica. Furthermore, these images will grace the cover of conference proceedings and a White Paper submitted to parliament post-conference. Additionally, a photo calendar for 2024 will be created, featuring all the submitted photos and distributed to stakeholders.

Join this movement to celebrate and appreciate the beauty of mental health. Use the hashtags #InMyMind and #Oevaru2023 on social media to share your journey and inspire others.

"In My Mind" is more than just a photographic expression campaign; it's a testament to the power of art and community in destigmatizing mental health and fostering understanding and compassion. So, pick up your camera and show the world what mental health means to you – it's a picture worth a thousand words.
