In a significant stride toward alleviating the pressing housing issue, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has given the green light for the construction of an additional 1,000 housing units in Kulhudhuffushi City. With the development of 400 housing units already underway, this move underscores the government's unwavering commitment to enhancing the living conditions of its residents.
Currently, the city grapples with a housing dilemma that has affected over 1,200 residents, highlighting the urgency of expanding housing facilities. Mayor Mohamed Athif expressed optimism about the latest development, citing President Solih's approval to construct the additional units. The Mayor emphasized that this expansion would substantially address the housing shortage that has challenged the city.
The initial plan was to develop 224 housing units, but the scope was increased to 400 in response to a council request. However, realizing the persistent gap, the administration's decision to extend this endeavor by an additional 1,000 units demonstrates a commitment to resolving the housing crisis comprehensively.
The Ministry of National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure awarded the contract to develop the first set of 400 housing units to the joint venture of Donbez Private Limited and the 23rd Metallurgical Construction Group Co. Limited in 2022. With foundation work underway since May this year, the project involves the construction of five apartment buildings, each housing 400 units spanning 1,000sqft. These well-designed units will comprise three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a sitting room, a kitchen, laundry room, and storeroom.
The holistic approach includes dedicating the ground floor of the buildings to businesses, fostering a vibrant community environment. The project's thoughtful design aims to address not only the housing challenge but also to contribute to the overall enhancement of the urban landscape.
As the most populous island in the northern region with over 9,000 residents, Kulhudhuffushi City's initiative to tackle its housing problem resonates with the government's commitment to its citizens' well-being. President Solih's foresight and responsive action signify a promising step forward for Kulhudhuffushi's residents and set a strong precedent for comprehensive urban development in the Maldives.
