The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has secured a significant stride in the nation’s infrastructure expansion, having been awarded a quartet of development projects spanning across four islands. These endeavors, commissioned by the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure, stand poised to transform local landscapes, bolster connectivity, and lay the groundwork for enhanced economic potential.
The contracts were formalized through a series of agreements inked between the Director General of the Planning Ministry, Fatimath Shana Farooq, and the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of MTCC, Shahid Hussain Moosa. Collectively, these projects encompass land reclamation, quay wall and breakwater rehabilitation, as well as harbor development, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to fostering sustainable growth.
Project Highlights: A Glimpse into Transformation
1. Funadhoo Land Reclamation: A sprawling 25 hectares of land will be reclaimed in Funadhoo, Shaviyani Atoll. This initiative will not only expand habitable spaces but also involves the construction of a 1,185m drainage bioswale and 35,400cbm boat beaching dredging. MTCC is tasked with bringing this vision to life within 360 days, at a total investment of USD9 million.
2. Kinbidhoo Reclamation Endeavor: In Thaa Atoll’s Kinbidhoo, an equivalent 25 hectares of land will undergo reclamation. The project is further enriched with the dredging of 306,162cbm and the creation of a 1,528m drainage bioswale. MTCC has committed to delivering this transformative initiative within 340 days, with an investment of USD9.6 million.
3. Thulhaadhoo Quay Wall and Breakwater Enhancement: Thulhaadhoo in Baa Atoll will experience a rejuvenated maritime infrastructure with a comprehensive plan encompassing a 551.91m quay wall repair, a 311m harbor breakwater, and various breakwater components. The project also integrates the construction of a jetty, apron, and access platform, facilitating seamless harbor operations. Completion within 270 days comes at an investment of USD1.4 million.
4. Raiymandhoo Harbor Development: Meemu Atoll’s Raiymandhoo will see a comprehensive harbor transformation, involving dredging, construction, and installation projects. The blueprint includes elements such as basin and channel dredging, the establishment of revetment, groynes, and breakwaters, and the installation of essential infrastructure. MTCC is poised to deliver this expansive undertaking in 480 days, backed by an investment of USD4.5 million.
