The Maldives Customs Service has recorded a robust 15% boost in revenue for the month of July, underscoring a dynamic trade landscape and robust economic activity in the archipelago. The latest statistics reveal that Customs raked in a substantial USD23 million in revenue for the said month, marking an impressive growth compared to the corresponding period last year.
Imports, a Pivotal Contributor
The Customs data reflects a commendable growth of 12% in the total value of imports, reaching an impressive USD305 million. The nations at the forefront of this import surge were India, Oman, China, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Malaysia, collectively propelling the nation’s trade scene. Notably, imports from India, Oman, China, UAE, and Malaysia stood at USD47 million, USD43 million, USD40 million, USD34 million, and USD26 million respectively. The prominent categories of imports encompassed a diverse array of products including fuel, machinery, mechanical and electrical appliances, and food items.
Exports Flourish, Empowering the Economy
Adding to the economic vibrancy, the Maldives experienced an impressive 70% increase in goods exports, totaling USD8.9 million for the month of July. This surge in outbound trade was driven by burgeoning exports to top destinations such as Thailand, Germany, the United Kingdom (UK), India, and France. Notably, 35% of the exported goods found their way to Thailand, followed by 21% to the UK, 15% to Germany, 6% to India, and 4% to France. The export category predominantly featured various frozen and preserved fish products, underscoring the Maldives’ prowess in the seafood sector.
Growing Maritime and Declarations Activity
Reflecting heightened trade activity, the data showcased an increased maritime presence, with 111 vessels arriving in the Maldives during July. This figure marked a notable rise from the previous year’s 93 vessel arrivals for the same period. Moreover, the customs processing received a considerable boost with 19,423 declarations processed in July 2023, showcasing an upswing from the 17,184 declarations during the same month last year.
