Yesterday, the Maldives International Arbitration Centre (MIAC) has announced the formal commencement of its services in matters of arbitration.
MIAC was established under Act No. 10/2013 (Maldives Arbitration Act) and is an independent government institution offering alternative dispute resolution services in addition to being the first and only institution offering arbitration services in the Maldives. It was founded with the objective of promoting arbitration as a means of dispute resolution and to provide cost-effective, efficient services to the business community and local and foreign investors.
Parties seeking arbitration services can now submit a case to MIAC through its website. Despite its recent establishment, MIAC already has experienced and renowned arbitrators, an automated case management system and efficient administrative support services.
In reiterating its commitment to providing modern hearing facilities, MIAC also provides an option for arbitral proceedings to be conducted online via integrated virtual services. The launch of the virtual facilities is critical in ensuring broad access to their services.
Since inception in 2019, some of their highlight achievements is the establishment of a register of renowned and experienced arbitrators, the introduction of a fully functional portal for automated case management, and the publication of MIAC Arbitration Rules.
