Government Seeks Contractor to Supply Solar PV Systems in 155 Mosques

The Ministry of Finance of the Maldives has announced that it is seeking a contractor to supply solar PV systems for 155 mosques across the country. The ministry is seeking a contractor as per the National Competitive Bidding (NCB) policy and bid openings are schooled to open on 17 August 2023.

The installation of solar PV systems in 155 selected mosques nationwide is an initiative undertaken by the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Technology. The scope of the endeavour also includes equipping mosques with air conditioning systems. With these changes in place, a 50% reduction in electricity costs is expected at these mosques. By employing renewable energy systems, the government aspires to encourage the public to adopt clean energy solutions.

Interested contractors are required to submit a bid security of approximately MVR 49000. The current administration has been emphasizing multiple projects that aim to reduce energy consumption and promote the generation of cleaner and greener energy aligning with the sustainable development goals (SDGs) set by the country. As of now, the government’s spending on energy generation accounts for roughly 10% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the Maldives.

The deployment of solar PV systems at these mosques will contribute to enhancing the overall experience of worshippers using these spaces by making them more comfortable and environmentally friendly. Additionally, it also underscores the government’s efforts to embrace renewable energy sources and the discourse of energy-efficient means in public places.
