On Wednesday, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Khaleel delivered remarks at the 116th Session of the Council of Ministers of the Organization of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) held in Brussels, Belgium. The Maldives recently acquired membership in the OACPS on 9 December 2022.
During his remarks, State Minister Khaleel extended his gratitude and appreciation to the Member States and the Secretariat of OACPS for their support in securing Maldives’ membership to the organization. He noted that with the Maldives becoming a member state, almost all Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are now members of the organization. He concluded his remarks by reaffirming the country’s strong commitment to work closely with OACPS member states to address shared global challenges.
The OACPS comprises 79 Member States from three different regions: Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific. The main objective of OACPS is to achieve sustainable development of its Member States and eventually lead its progressive integration into the world economy. The Maldives became a member of the OACPS as independent states with comparable economic structures and needs are admitted into the organization irrespective of geographical location.
