On Wednesday, the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure contracted Capital Marine and Civil Construction (CMMCC) to carry out land reclamation projects in three islands of the Maldives for airport development. These islands include Thulhadhoo in Baa Atoll, Vilufushi in Thaa Atoll and Bilehfahi in Shaviyani Atoll.
In a signing ceremony held yesterday at the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure, the contract agreement was exchanged between the Ministry’s Director General Fathmath Shaana Farooq and the Managing Director of CMCC, Sivaraja Manivannan.
Under this project, large hectares of land will be reclaimed from each island. 44.7 hectares of land reclamation will be conducted in B. Thulhadhoo while 56.34 hectares of land will be reclaimed from Th. Vilufushi and Sh. Bilehfahi each. The contract was awarded for a value of USD 42, 450,783.48 and is set to be completed within 280 days.
The reclamation of land for airport development marks a significant step forward in improving connectivity and tourism prospects across the country. The islands selected for airport development are located in strategically important regions, helping to enhance inbound travel and local tourism as well as increase investor opportunities in these provinces.
