On Saturday, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih inaugurated the Asian Surfing Championship 2023, the largest surfing competition to be held in the Asian continent. The competition is being held at Thulusdhoo Island in Kaafu Atoll from 8-17 July 2023. The President was accompanied to the inaugural ceremony by Vice President Faisal Naseem, Minister of Youth, Sports & Community Empowerment Ahmed Mahloof, and the President of the Asian Surfing Federation.
During the opening remarks, the President expressed his gratitude to the organizers and wished all competing surfers well and hoped for success. The Asian Surfing Federation also presented President Solih with a commemorative plaque as a token of their appreciation. The inaugural ceremony also saw a sand ceremony, which symbolized the participating nations’ unity and the convergence of diverse cultures and backgrounds within the competing teams.
More than 15 countries are taking part in the championship, across various categories. Six surfers from the Maldives will also be partaking in the tournament.
