President Inaugurates Land Reclamation Project on Gulhifalhu Island

On Sunday, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih inaugurated the land reclamation project on Gulhifalhu Island. During the function held to mark the initiation, the President stated that land allotments for the recipients of the ‘Binveriya’ housing scheme will commence in August. Last month, the preliminary recipients of land plots were published in the Government Gazette.

Speaking at the function, the President regarded the Gulhifalhu land reclamation project as a key development initiative with significant positive implications for the whole country, irrespective of its displacement from the Male’ region. He stated that the project will revolutionize the Male’ area and one of the most notable benefits would undoubtedly be on the housing crisis faced in the region.

Apart from the land allocation to the Binveriya housing scheme, the 150-hectare land reclamation project would also support the development of Gulhifalhu port. President Solih said that the administration is currently planning to allot 2000 housing plots in Gulhifalhu with an additional 2000 reserved for the housing scheme in Giraavarufalhu.

Land reclamation is also underway in Giraavarufalhu with 20 hectares of land already reclaimed. The Binveriya housing scheme will allocate 2,200 plots in Hulhumalé, bringing the total number of land plots granted under the plan to 6,200. President Solih has also announced that the administration is exploring ways to increase the availability of land for residential purposes.
