On Thursday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives, Abdulla Shahid officially re-opened the Embassy of Maldives in the United States in a ribbon-cutting ceremony. This significant re-opening of the Embassy also marks the return to a full-time diplomatic presence in the United States after a hiatus of 14 years. The resident Maldivian community in Washington, D.C. also witnessed the momentous occasion.
The reception held to mark the re-opening was attended by Chief Justice of the Maldives, Uz. Ahmed Muthasim Adnan, Assistant Secretary of State, Donald Lu and other senior Government Officials from the White House, State Department, Treasury, USAID, Office of the United States Trade Representative, United States Chamber of Commerce, think tanks and media, and audience from the wider diplomatic community.
The Embassy of the Maldives to the United States will serve as a crucial bridge between the two countries in cultivating economic growth, cultural and people-to-people ties that will mutually benefit both nations. The establishment of the Embassy signifies the beginning of new reinvigorated and strengthened diplomatic ties between the Maldives and the United States. It is expected to bring forward greater cooperation and collaboration between the two countries in the global arena.
