On Tuesday, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih returned to Male’ City after a two-day official visit to the island of Ukulhas in Alifu Alifu atoll. During his visit, he attended and partook in the national-level commemorations of World Environment Day 2023.
At the function held to mark the day, President Solih emphassized the administration’s aim to transition the Maldives into a nation that prioritizes environmentally friendly energy generation. He noted that this will only be achieved by making the move towards renewable energy sources and reducing the country’s dependence and reliance on fossil fuels.
Moreover, the President also attended the ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ festival held on the island. The event exhibited various information on waste recycling, garbage disposal and waste segregation. Additionally, different pieces made from recycled plastic were showcased at the event for the public to view as well.
On the sidelines of the World Environment Day celebrations, the President met with the members of the Island Council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) of Ukulhas Island. Both sides discussed issues pertaining to the island and spoke on the socioeconomic development of Ukulhas and the concerns of the island community.
