On Sunday, Velana International Airport (VIA) announced that it will now accept digital identity cards for domestic flights, enabling a step forward with the initiative introduced by the National Centre for Information Technology.
The move was greenlighted after a circular issued by the Ministry of Defence which authorized the acceptance of a wide range of identification documentation by VIA for checking in passengers on domestic flights. Under this facilitation, passengers flying domestically can make use of the following non-expired documents for their travel purpose from airline ticket purchase, check-in, and identification at security checkpoints.
These documents include:
Passport
Citizenship card/ Digital Citizenship card
Work Visa card/ Digital Work Visa card
License card/ Digital License card
Airport Security Pass
Photo issued by a government agency and an official document bearing the ID card number
The new development aligns with Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL)’s commitment to enhancing passenger convenience and bringing forward digital transformation in all its operations.
