Coming Together as a Community at the Newly Opened Picnic Area at the island of Kandoodhoo

The largest local bank operating in the Maldives, Bank of Maldives Plc (BML), is one of the greatest supporter of community development projects in the country. As a part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) instigated their ‘Aharenge Bank Community Fund’, which targets to empower local individuals and NGOs to contribute to their communities by way of sustainable projects. As part of this project, the bank provides funding for proposals presenting ideas of community-based projects All winning proposals are granted MVR 50,000 to transform their ideas into reality. 

In this regard, a winning proposal was put forward by Kandoo Sports club for the development of a picnic area at the island of Kandoodhoo in Thaa Atoll. The Bank notes that it is a natural space for people to come together, strengthen familial relations and build a socially connected society.

The developed picnic area integrated with huts, beach umbrellas, sitting areas, a traditional Maldivian ‘undhoalige’, fresh water well, garbage bins, spaces for cooking, barbecues and exercising. In order to make the space even greener than it previously was and for extra shade, over 30 palms and trees have been planted in the area. 

Commenting on the successful implementation of the proposal, Kandoo Sports Club states their desire to accommodate residents from neighboring islands in visiting and using the space in the near future.
