In Instilling Love Fishing Amongst Children – Let’s Fish The Maldivian Way Book Series

Coinciding with the 40th National Fishermen’s Day, a book series for children titled ‘Let’s Fish The Maldivian Day’ was launched this Thursday. It is authored by a former teacher who joint the fisheries sector in the year 2018; Ahmed Shafiu from the island of Gemanafushi in Gaafu Alif Atoll.

The illustrated books which comes in both Dhivehi and English languages, aims to explain the different methods of fisheries practiced in the Maldives through a manner in which children would understand it. Additionally, it will also teach names of fishes, names of techniques, equipment used and other fisheries related information for children. A coloring book is also included in the series.

Commenting on the book series, the author, Ahmed Shafiu notes that it is designed to in a way to to keep children's interests peaked and to increase their knowledge. The book series will be available for purchase in bookshops in the Male’ City prior to the end of the month.

Fishing is the second largest economic activity carried out in the Maldives and the lifeblood of our people. The Maldivian waters are home to an abundance of aquatic life and thousands of species of fish, ranging from small types such as snapper, squirrel fish, and parrot fish to large pelagic fish like grouper, giant trevally, and tuna.
