Foreign Minister Shahid Meets With Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan

On Tuesday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives, Abdulla Shahid met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan, His Excellency Hayashi Yoshimasa. During the meeting, Foreign Minister Shahid conveyed his appreciation for the continuous support and assistance provided by the Government of Japan to the Maldives for the past 50 years.

Minister Shahid also reflected on the long-standing and friendly relationship between the Maldives and Japan. Similarly, Foreign Minister Hayashi also highlighted the strong bilateral relations existing between both countries and expressed his appreciation to the Government of Maldives for its cooperation with Japan in the international sphere and regional issues. In this regard, Minister Hayashi especially underscored the Maldives’ support in realizing the ‘Free and Open Indo Pacific’ vision.

Speaking further at the meeting, both ministers recalled the close historical relations between the Maldives and Japan and reaffirmed their commitment to further enhance bilateral and multilateral relations through increased cooperation and collaboration. Minister Shahid was accompanied at the meeting by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Khaleel, Ambassador of Maldives to Japan, Hassan Sobir, Deputy Ambassador Mohamed Ameeth Ahmed Manik, Joint Secretary, Mariyam Midhfa Naeem and Assistant Director Mohamed Shujau.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Munich Leaders Meeting, currently taking place in Tokyo, Japan. Foreign Minister Shahid is on an official visit to Japan to attend the meeting.
