The President Announces Decision To Introduce Merit Scholarships This Year

On Monday night, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced the decision to introduce merit scholarships during this year. He made the announcement while speaking at the awarding ceremony of the President’s Scholarship and High Achiever’s Scholarship for the top achievers of the batch 2022. The ceremony was held in the Umar Zahir Office Building and was attended by cabinet ministers and other high-level government officials.

Speaking at the ceremony, the President remarked that the new scholarship programme will increase the number of higher education opportunities provided by the administration. Students who did not fit the criteria for the President’s and High Achievers’ scholarships are eligible for the new scholarship programme. However, they must have attained the highest grades in the required subjects of their chosen field of study to qualify for the opportunity. Further details regarding the scheme will be shared by the Ministry of Higher Education later on.

In his address, President Solih shed light on the various high education opportunities facilitated by the current administration including scholarships, student loan schemes and awards. He noted that compared to previous administrations, this administration has offered the highest number of opportunities to ensure modern education for all and promote higher education among youth.

Likewise, the President also underscored the fact that the number of higher education scholarships provided by the administration in various professions has significantly improved in recent years. On this note, he emphasized the administration’s free degree programme which has paved for low-income families to pursue higher education at home.

During the ceremony, the President presented the President’s Scholarship award letters to 17 students. The High Achiever’s Scholarship award letters were also conferred to 138 recipients, out of which 102 were girls.
